Elwood wins wild CIC shootout at M-G

FAIRMOUNT, Ind. — Sammy Mireles rushed for 339 yards and seven touchdowns, and Elwood outlasted Madison-Grant 74-54 on Friday night in a wild Central Indiana Conference shootout.

The Panthers (2-2, 2-0 CIC) used a 42-0 run that spanned the end of the first half and all of the third quarter to wipe out an early deficit and remain perfect in defense of their league title.

Mireles got things rolling with a 1-yard touchdown run, and sophomore Zane Boyer scored on the 2-point conversion to tie the game at 34-34 with 4:42 left in the first half.

Elwood then forced a 3-yard punt and took over at Madison-Grant’s 40-yard line. On the first play from scrimmage, Mireles burst through the line and into the end zone for a lead the Panthers never relinquished.

The first of three Argylls turnovers in the third quarter set up Boyer’s 6-yard touchdown run with 8:49 to play in the period. Following a second Madison-Grant fumble at its own 39, Alex Mireles threw a 35-yard touchdown pass to London Leavell.

Leavell then recovered a fumble on the ensuing kickoff, and Alex Mireles threw a 32-yard touchdown to Jared Bourff on the next play. Sammy Mireles capped the scoring with a 6-yard run with 1:54 to play in the period, and Elwood led 68-34.

Madison-Grant (1-3, 0-2) answered with three scores in the fourth quarter — including touchdown runs of 85 yards by Austin Purkey and 70 yards by freshman Adam Dreadman — but it was not enough.

The Argylls got 167 yards on 13 carries from Cam Myers, but the junior sat out most of the second half with an injury. Myers had one rushing touchdown and added a 23-yard touchdown reception from Purkey.

Luke Stroup ran for 113 yards and two touchdowns on 19 carries, Purkey finished with 146 rushing yards and one score. Purkey also completed both of his pass attempts for 47 yards and one score.

Bjoern Werner's rookie training camp was rather quiet. The German-born outside linebacker went through individual drills and worked hard in full-team sessions, but he was overwhelmed by all the new information he was processing. And it was holding him back. When the season started, Werner was further set back by a foot injury that cost him three games, and he finished the year with just 2.5 sacks. Then the former Florida State star went to work.
