---- — ANDERSON — It was a busy holiday weekend for the Indianapolis Colts.
The roster was in constant flux, beginning with Saturday's cutdown to the 53-man limit, and continuing with transactions on Sunday and Monday.
The most recent addition came in the form of outside linebacker Cam Johnson — a 6-foot-3, 268-pounder out of the University of Virginia. He was drafted by the San Francisco 49ers in the seventh round in 2011 and acquired for a conditional seventh-round pick by the Colts on Monday.
Johnson had two sacks and blocked a punt that he recovered for a touchdown during the Niners' preseason finale last week. He spent the first 14 game weeks last season on San Francisco's practice squad before being elevated to the active roster for the final two games.
Indianapolis head coach Chuck Pagano values the second-year player's versatility and said he can play either the rush or strong-side outside linebacker position.
The Colts also completed their eight-man practice squad Monday, adding undrafted rookie wide receiver Da'Rick Rogers and running back Kerwynn Williams to the mix. Tight end Justice Cunnigham was released from the active roster to make room for Johnson.
On Sunday, the Colts brought in tight end Jack Doyle — an undrafted rookie who was cut by the Tennessee Titans on Saturday. Doyle was a high school star at Cathedral, and Pagano said he's a good fit for Pep Hamilton's offense.
"It's great to have a hometown guy back home," Pagano said. "He gives us another added dimension, a big guy that can be kind of the hammer, if you will, in the run game and still give you some things in the pass game."
On Saturday, the Colts reached the league-mandated 53-man limit with 22 transactions.
Linebacker Daniel Adongo, safety Larry Asante, center Thomas Austin, cornerback Marshay Green, defensive end Lawrence Guy, quarterback Chandler Harnish, fullback Robert Hughes, offensive tackle Ben Ijalana, tight end Dominique Jones, wide receiver Jeremy Kelley, linebacker Josh McNary, defensive tackle Drake Nevis, cornerback Sheldon Price, wide receiver Jabin Sambrano, wide receiver Lanear Sampson, linebacker Monte Simmons, offensive tackle Bradley Sowell, nose tackle Martin Tevaseu and offensive tackle Lee Ziemba were released.
Adongo, Austin, Harnish, Jones, McNary and Price were re-signed to the practice squad Sunday after clearing waivers.
Offensive tackle Emmett Cleary, linebacker Shawn Loiseau and cornerback Daxton Swanson were waived-injured Saturday, and wide receiver Nathan Palmer was released from the injured reserve list Monday.
"We let some really good football players go and better people," Pagano said. "But we feel good about our 53-man roster. As you know, it's a fluid situation. It's day-to-day as always as we know."
