Arabians win Pool C in county volleyball tourney

PENDLETON — Pendleton Heights outlasted Liberty Christian and Alexandria in a triple-header Wednesday night to claim a No. 1 seed in the Madison County Volleyball Tournament.

The Arabians will face Anderson Prepatory Academy in the first round of the single-elimination tournament Saturday at Elwood at 10:15 a.m. Alexandria, which finished second in Pool C, faces Madison-Grant in a rematch of the past three county championship matches at 11:15.

Liberty Christian meets host Elwood in the opening match at 9 a.m.

Here is a look at Wednesday's action:

Pendleton Heights 2, Alexandria 0In what could arguably be a match between the two tournament favorites going in, the Arabians grabbed a hard-fought 25-15, 25-17 win to gain an advantage in pool play. Pendleton Heights broke open a close 6-5 game in the first set with six straight points and cruised behind solid play by Carly Wilson and Quincey Gary. The Arabians seized momentum early in the second set, going up 10-3. Allie Hueston helped keep Alex within striking distance, but the Tigers could not close to within five until a point by Abigail Miller made it 20-15. The Arabians scored five of the next seven points to close out the set and the first-round match.

Alexandria 2, Liberty Christian 0Alexandria came off of the disappointing loss in Game 1 and scored a 25-16, 25-5 win over the Lions. Alexandria came out on fire in the first set, scoring the first four points. However, Liberty Christian showed some fight and scored 12 of the next 17 points to lead 12-9 after a point by Kelsey Flowers. The lead would be short-lived as Alex went on a 7-0 run to lead 16-12 on an ace by Jordan Goodman. The Tigers maintained control to win the set 25-16. Liberty Christian scored the first point of the second set, but Alexandria ripped off the next 10 points to seize control. Hueston put an exclamation point on her solid night, scoring kills to end both sets.
