Angie Colip: Bowling season is back, and competition already is heating up

Whether you have kept up your skills over the summer or took a break, bowlers are back into the centers for a brand new season.

People have been dusting off their bowling balls, or buying a new one, shining their shoes, catching up with their “bowling friends” and getting back into the routine of heading out to the center. Competitive or recreational, we all meet again in the same place for another great season.

The bowling column is back, and I am looking forward to another great year. Please keep the information coming. Anything that pertains to the sport of bowling is welcome. I will do my best to include it in my column.

The high scores that have previously run in Monday’s paper will be moving to Tuesday.

The new Anderson USBC Association board has been busy this summer. They have completed the new constitution and by-laws. Congratulations to all of the board members for taking on the job of putting together the new merged association. Lionel Stewart — President, Chris Kendall — Vice President, Ashley Wallace — Second Vice, Shanna Bass — Sgt. At Arms, Sterling Rogers, Tom Ferguson, Margie Chappell, Bill Kendall, Sr. and Connie Miller — two-year members, and Steve Davis, Terry Ellis, Jim Talkington and Chip Bonvillain are your board members. Thank you all for your hard work.

They have also put together a calendar of this year’s upcoming events. Anderson is honored to play host to multiple state events this year.

The month of January brings the Master’s Tournament on the 25 and 26. February has the city tournament with a brand new format. I will have more information as the date gets closer. March through May hosts the Women’s State Tournament. Get these events on your calendar now.

The Alexandria USBC and the Anderson USBC have joined forces with H2M Management/Score 60 Coaching for a coach’s clinic and bowler seminar. On Oct. 13, from 9 a.m. to noon at Norwood Bowl, some of the most knowledgeable in the bowling world will give coaches and bowlers a new perspective on the game.

Bjoern Werner's rookie training camp was rather quiet. The German-born outside linebacker went through individual drills and worked hard in full-team sessions, but he was overwhelmed by all the new information he was processing. And it was holding him back. When the season started, Werner was further set back by a foot injury that cost him three games, and he finished the year with just 2.5 sacks. Then the former Florida State star went to work.
