Marquez dominates MotoGP at Indianapolis

INDIANAPOLIS – The impressive rookie season of Marc Marquez continued Sunday at the Red Bull Indianapolis Grand Prix as he dominated the MotoGP.

Marquez, who set a track record during qualifying, dropped to third at the start but moved into the second spot after nine circuits, passing teammate Dani Pedrosa.

He closed on leader Jorge Lorenzo, and on the 13th lap made the decisive pass entering Turn 2 and from there pulled away to win by 3.495 seconds over Pedrosa, who got around Lorenzo with two laps remaining.

It was Marquez’s fourth win of the year, third in a row and gave him a sweep of the three races in the U.S., winning earlier in the year at the Circuit of the Americas in Texas and at Laguna Seca.

It also marked Marquez’s third overall win at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, he won the Moto 2 races in 2011 and 2012.

The Spaniard was at the top of the speed charts for all three practice sessions, qualifying and Sunday’s warm-up.

Behind the three front runners, there were two spirited battles for the fourth and seventh positions.

Valentino Rossi passed Cal Crutchlow on the final lap to claim the fourth spot with Alvaro Bautista settling for sixth.

American Nicky Hayden lost the eighth spot on the final corner when Bradley Smith outdueled him down the front straight by .011 seconds.

Colin Edwards, one of three Americans in the field, settled for 13th, and Blake Young failed to complete a lap.

Esteve Rabat patiently climbed from the fourth starting position to pass Takaaki Nakagami with three laps remaining to win for the second time this year in Moto 2 competition.

Rabat dropped back as far as sixth after eight laps and then started a march to the front, running in the third position after 18 circuits. He passed Pol Espargaro on Lap 21 and rapidly closed on Nakagami, who was looking for his first career win.
