Indians sprint to PH track title

PENDLETON, Ind. — Through the wind and rain, the Anderson Indians brought home their first title in the 57th Annual Pendleton Track Invitational Thursday night at Pendleton Heights High School.

Not quite a week removed from a second place finish at the Madison County meet, the Indians used a big night from Jalin Beard to outscore Mt.Vernon 151.5-141. Beard, who did not run Friday at the County meet, scored wins in the 100 and 200 meter dashes, the long jump and led off Anderson’s win in the 4X100 relay to account for forty points.

“Jalin was out of track and field last year,” Anderson coach Cary House said. “He’s a phenomenal athlete and was the difference in the meet tonight.”

The Indians dominated the shorter sprint races, taking home the 100 and 200 meter dash blue ribbons, a second in the 400 (Samaj White), a third in the 110 hurdles (Jaylen Pierce) and a 1st place in the 4X100 (Beard, Marc Andrews, Dorian Wilson, Pierce).

“I knew we were going to get better every week we run,” House said. “It was a shame that last week was our first meet, the county is such a big meet. We still have lots of room for improvement.” The Indians were presented with the Invitational trophy and immediately took off on a loud victory lap around the track.

“We’re thrilled. It’s a nice rebound from Friday,” said House. “Every time you can come out and represent your school well, it’s a bonus. That’s what we’re here for, to represent our school the best we can and I thought we did tonight.”

Host Pendleton came home third with 119 points, a solid night for a young team running at home for the first time. “As young as our team is, we run nothing but freshmen and sophomores in the sprint events,” Arabian coach Ryan Potter said. “Running at home was a little bit of a wake up call for them. Their friends are here, their families are here, it’s (running at home) a little bit of a distraction.”

Pendleton scored victories in the shot put and discus with Skyler Prol along with a high jump title for Sean Brady. The Arabians had runnerup finishes in the 800 meter run (Colby Knecht), 1600 meter run (Brandon Smith), 3200 meter run (Eli Young), high jump (TJ Hicks), pole vault (Mark McCallister) and long jump (Sean Brady).

“I can’t complain, we had a really good night,” said Potter. “We competed well. We have some things to work on and we can move forward with it.”

Yorktown came home fourth with 71 points, Lapel finished fifth with 59.5 points, Liberty Christian was sixth with 33 and Frankton was seventh with 32 points. Lapel’s Dalton Busch scored third place finishes in the 100 and 400, Bailey Partington was third in the 800 and the 4X100 relay team also finished third.

Frankton’s Bobby Brown placed second in the 110 meter and 300 meter hurdles to go along with a fifth place in the high jump. Liberty Christian’s Austin Castor finished third in the 300 meter hurdles, while Franklin Nunn had a fourth in the 400 dash and fifth in the 100 dash.

Jonathan Newsome knows what it feels like to be a spectator at the Indianapolis Colts' training camp. He spent one day in each of the past two summers watching practice alongside his Ball State teammates. When the first public practice of 2014 begins today at 1:50 p.m., Newsome — a fifth-round pick in May's draft — will be on the other side of the fence as a rookie outside linebacker earning his stripes.
