Ken de la Bastide: Speedway closes out 2013

Gerster wins in North Carolina

For local racing fans who have gotten their fill of Thanksgiving turkey, football and Black Friday, Anderson Speedway is closing out the 2013 season this weekend.

The track will be hosting the first “Turkey Bash” that is replacing the New Year’s Day racing, which has battled horrendous weather conditions in the past.

Topping the racing card is a 100-lap event for Street Stocks with NASH-FM Thunder Cars, Front Wheel Drive division in action on the oval and Figure-8 course and Mini-Cups.

Racing starts at 1 p.m. and the early weather forecast is calling for temperatures in the 40s with clear skies.

As part of the event the speedway is collecting new unwrapped toys for the “Toys for Tots” campaign. Speedway owner Rick Dawson said anyone bringing some toys will receive a $2 discount on an adult ticket.

“We’re getting a lot of calls from drivers around the state,” Dawson said of interest in the 100-lap Street Stock feature. “This is going to be a good way to end the year.”

Anderson’s Josh Poore won a 200-lap Street Stock event last June that saw 14 drivers finish on the lead lap.

With warm temperatures and clear skies in the forecast, there should be a good field of Street Stock teams in attendance.

Calvin Parham won the 2013 track championship with Tyler Marsh, Danny Adams, Jimmy Kirby and Andrew Cook rounding out the top five in the point standings.

As in the past, Anderson Speedway is offering discount tickets for the 2014 season. A book of 20 tickets costs $140 and 10 tickets are priced at $80. The tickets are not valid for the Pay Less Little 500 and the Stoops Freightliner Redbud 300.

In other racing news: Noblesville’s Brian Gerster swept the Mason Dixon Meltdown at Southern National Speedway in North Carolina last weekend for the Must See Racing Xtreme Sprint Series.
