Bulldogs feast on Tigers 74-34

LAPEL — The Lapel girls basketball team did all the damage needed in the first quarter Wednesday night as it rolled over Alexandria 74-34.

Lapel (2-0) outscored the Tigers 25-5 in the first quarter and had no reason to look back. The home team played a nearly perfect game over the first eight minutes.

By the time the Bulldogs had 14 points, all five starters had scored. Lapel hit 11-of-16 from the field and had just two turnovers. Defensively, Lapel used mostly half-court pressure to force eight Alexandria miscues.

Just because all the necessary damage was completed in eight minutes, that doesn't mean the pain ended there. Even while making liberal use of seven players, the Bulldogs were able to limit Alexandria (0-4) to two points in the second stanza and pulled away at intermission to a 44-7 advantage.

"I thought our intensity was very good," said Lapel coach Kevin Brattain. "I thought we stuck with it. This group sometimes backs off something that's working, but we didn't."

The Bulldogs had four starters score in double figures, topped by 15 apiece from Kirsten Rich and Mackenzie Boles. Natalia Campbell added 12, and Kaitlin Dobbins pitched in 10.

Lapel also won the rebound battle 36-27. Boles and Mary-Jewel Stohler each nabbed six boards.

Brattain was especially pleased with his post duo of Stohler and Samantha Kern. They scored seven apiece.

"We wanted to get double figures out of the post, and for two games we've gotten that," said Brattain of his 2-0 Bulldogs.

Unhampered by Lapel's pressure in the second half, Alexandria's offense greatly improved, especially that of Desirae Litchfield, who scored a team-high 10 points. The Tigers had just seven at the half but managed 27 in the second half.

Morgan Oliver led the visitors in rebounding with six.

Bjoern Werner's rookie training camp was rather quiet. The German-born outside linebacker went through individual drills and worked hard in full-team sessions, but he was overwhelmed by all the new information he was processing. And it was holding him back. When the season started, Werner was further set back by a foot injury that cost him three games, and he finished the year with just 2.5 sacks. Then the former Florida State star went to work.
