Lapel holds off Shenandoah girls

LAPEL, Ind. — Lapel capitalized on a young Shenandoah team by applying pressure and it led to a 60-42 girls basketball win Saturday afternoon.

"We wanted to put pressure on them because they are so young," said Lapel coach Kevin Brattain.

With Brattain instructing his team from the bench to apply either full-court or three-quarter-court pressure after made baskets in the second quarter, the Raiders had eight turnovers in the second period. The Bulldogs moved from a slim 11-10 lead after one quarter to a 29-17 halftime advantage.

The offensive part of that for Lapel came a lot from the Bulldogs' outside shooters Kaitlin Dobbins and Natalia Campbell. The two combined to hit 7-of-10 from 3-point range. Dobbins hit her first four and Campbell her last three.

"Our defense let us down," said Shenandoah coach Chelsea Kilian. "We knew they could shoot. Our rotations were slow."

Lapel hit 21-of-44 as a team from the field and 11-of-14 from the free throw line. Kirsten Rich hit half her shots from the field and had a team-high 13 points for the Bulldogs. Dobbins followed with 12 and Campbell had 11.

"That was a good basketball team we beat," said Brattain of the now 12-2 Raiders. "We had a lot more intensity than we had in the county. We know they are a potential sectional foe. Dobbins and Campbell have to hit for us against a zone."

The Raiders did managed to cut the lead to nine in the fourth quarter with the ball. But could never get closer. The visitors put up 22 3-pointers but hit only four.

"We try to have them take what the defense gives them in learning how to play the game," said Kilian. "That's more 3-pointers than we usually take. There were a few of those shots we will show them on film that they might not have been their best choices."

Shenandoah had just five players score and only two reached double figures. Rachel Krathwohl scored 13 points and Abby Roeder came off the bench for 10. The Raiders won the rebound battle 35-29 with Micah Kimball leading the way with nine.

"This is a game we can build on," said Kilian, whose team has no seniors.

Shenandoah hosts Yorktown on Tuesday.

Lapel (12-2) visits Tri-Central on Monday.
