Cold weather can't chill prep bowlers

As the weather drops below freezing and the wind blows an arctic chill across the area, the lanes are heating up as the high school bowling regular season winds down and tournament time starts up.

The junior varsity finished up their season at Norwood Bowl with an individual scholarship tournament. Alexandria made a strong showing on the girl’s side with the top two seeds representing the Tigers. Emily Flook took home first place by outscoring teammate Anna Etherington in the stepladder finals.

Anderson’s Charlie Colip took home fourth place with Noblesville’s Jordan Calamusa finishing third. Justin Sayre of Alexandria finished second and Noblesville’s Sam Fields claimed the championship in the stepladder finals.

As the JV finished up their season, the varsity finished up their regular season last week with a position round hosted by Stardust. There was a tie on both the boy’s and girl’s side. Alexandria and Anderson tied for the conference championship on the girl’s side with both teams recording an 11-2 record.

On the boy’s side, with a 12-1 record, Alexandria, Pendleton and Noblesville made for a three way tie for the conference championship.

With no clear cut advantage, the sectional race just got a little more heated. While the boys travel to Wells Lanes in Elwood, the girl’s will travel to Alexandria’s Norwood.

A 1 p.m. start time on Saturday kicks off the singles event of the sectional for both. Bowling as individuals, three games will be bowled with the top eight girls and top 15 boys advancing to the regional. The top four series’ on both sides will advance to a stepladder final to determine the sectional champions.

Sunday begins at 1 p.m. also for the team event. Each team will bowl two regular games. They will then be seeded and lanes assigned by seeding for five baker games. The top four boys teams and top two girls teams will advance to the regional. All teams advancing will continue to a stepladder final to determine sectional champions.

Bjoern Werner's rookie training camp was rather quiet. The German-born outside linebacker went through individual drills and worked hard in full-team sessions, but he was overwhelmed by all the new information he was processing. And it was holding him back. When the season started, Werner was further set back by a foot injury that cost him three games, and he finished the year with just 2.5 sacks. Then the former Florida State star went to work.
