Elwood girls power past Daleville

ELWOOD — On a frigid Thursday night the Elwood girls basketball team was red hot, pulling out a 60-26 win over the Daleville Broncos.

The Panthers (11-5) started a little sluggish holding a 7-5 lead midway through the first quarter, but they went on a 9-0 run between then and the beginning of the second quarter to open up a 16-5 lead.

Katelyn Leisure paced Elwood with eight first-half points and Jessie Noone had nine in the opening 16 minutes to double up the Broncos (3-11) 30-15 at the half.

The Panthers forced their opponent into 16 first-half turnovers, which helped open up the big lead for the home team.

Daleville was able to cut down on its turnovers in the second half by only handing the ball to Elwood eight times, but the Broncos were outscored 30-11 behind the Panthers’ hot shooting.

Elwood coach Mickey Hosier’s team drilled 13-of-26 from the field, and Tenasha Stephens went for eight of her 10 points for the game in the third quarter. Stephens was 5-of-8 from the field in the win.

Hosier got 10 of the 11 girls he played in the scoring column with Noone leading the Panthers with 15 points.

Daleville’s Brandi Granger hit 4-of-14 from 3-point range and 6-of-19 for the game to lead all scorers with 16 points. She also led her team with six rebounds.

Elwood outrebounded the Broncos 39 to 22 and reserve Jordyn Wright paced her team with seven caroms.
