Snow, wind, cold wipe away area schedule

The Herald Bulletin

ANDERSON, Ind. — What was supposed to be a busy Saturday across all of the winter sports turned into a pile of postponements as the worst of the winter season continues to plague the high schools.

The second highest January snowfall total on record has left athletes, coaches and athletic directors scrambling.

It didn’t matter whether the events were scheduled in the afternoon or evening, nothing escaped the ravages of the wind-blown snow and icy roads.

About half of Saturday’s scheduled events have new dates and the other half with either soon have them or will be cancelled as athletic directors scramble to find new dates for these contests as the regular season nears conclusion for wrestling, swimming and girls basketball.

Locally, the Central Indiana Conference wrestling meet, slated for Elwood High School, was moved back to Monday.

Even that seemed optimistic in light of the frigid temperatures beginning tonight and running through Wednesday.

The wrestling state tournament begins on Saturday with most area teams going to Hamilton Heights, meaning any conference tournaments have a very small window for rescheduling.

The girls swimming sectional begins on Feb. 6 so time is ticking away rapidly to plan new dates for postponed events there as well.

Of the postponed events from Saturday, three have new dates for this coming week and all but one of the rest of the games have new dates for the following week.

The second highest January snowfall total on record has left athletes, coaches and athletic directors scrambling to put the finishing touches on this season and hoping for better weather once spring sports begin in March.
