Harrison, Dungy among Hall of Fame finalists

ANDERSON — Peyton Manning is not the only former member of the Indianapolis Colts with something major to gain this weekend in the greater New York City area.

Marvin Harrison and Tony Dungy are among 15 finalists for the Pro Football Hall of Fame. A class of six or seven inductees will be announced Saturday after voting at the Super Bowl site.

Harrison starred in Indianapolis from 1996-2008 and ranks third in NFL history with 1,102 catches. His 128 touchdowns are the fifth-highest total in league history, and his 14,580 yards rank seventh.

Even in this era of exploding offensive stats, Harrison holds the single-season record with 143 receptions in 2002.

But wide receivers have had a rough road to induction in recent years. Tim Brown — who had 1,094 catches for 14,934 yards and 100 touchdowns in a 17-year career — will be trying to make it to the shrine in Canton, Ohio, for the sixth time.

Andre Reed — with 951 catches for 13,198 yards and 87 touchdowns in 16 seasons — is trying to gain induction for the ninth time.

Dungy is the only head coach on the list of finalists this year and the first black head coach ever to win the Super Bowl.

He posted a 139-69 career record and made 11 playoff appearances in 13 seasons with the Colts and Buccaneers. Dungy's teams qualified for the postseason in each of his final 10 seasons, and his Super Bowl title came following the 2006 season.

Three of Dungy's former players also are Hall of Fame finalists this year, with former Bucs linebacker Derrick Brooks and safety John Lynch joining Harrison.

Other finalists include defensive end Michael Strahan (Giants), offensive tackle Walter Jones (Seahawks), running back Jerome Bettis (Rams, Steelers), kicker Morten Anderson (Saints, Falcons, Giants, Chiefs, Vikings), linebacker/defensive end Kevin Greene (Rams, Steelers, Panthers, 49ers), linebacker/defensive end Charles Haley (49ers, Cowboys), cornerback/safety Aeneas Williams (Cardinals, Rams), offensive guard Will Shields (Chiefs) and owner Edward DeBartolo Jr. (49ers).
