Oak Hill dominates CIC golf

ANDERSON, Ind. — On a day that featured nearly everything but snow, the Oak Hill Golden Eagles golf team came away with a dominating 32-stroke win to defend their Central Indiana Conference title Saturday at Grandview Golf Course.

The top four Eagle golfers broke 80 and were named to the all-conference team.

Leading the way was Cody White, who was the tournament medalist with a 70. Not bad for a young man who started off his day with a triple bogey. “I hit the ball really well,” White said. “I started off with a triple bogey but made an eagle on an 88 yard chip and started hitting well after that.”

White carded a 7 on hole No. 1, but birdied two holes before the eagle 2 on  No. 5. White’s brother BJ finished two shots back with a 72.

“Cody put it over on his older brother today,” Oak Hill coach Gerry Conway said of his freshman. “Cody is a fine player, he is going to have a great high school career. BJ came through for us and did what we expected him to do.”

Chasing the Eagles were a trio of teams that finished within three shots of each other. Eastbrook wound up second with a team score of 328, led by Chris Duckwall’s 75. Mississinewa was third with a 329, led by Zeke Lockwood’s 73.

Finishing fourth was Madison-Grant with a 330. Senior Austin Engle led the way for the Argylls with a 77. “I started off real nice with two pars and a bogey but then I tripled (bogeyed) a hole and had to play catch-up from there,” Engle said. Blackford edged out Alexandria 349-351 to finish fifth while Frankton came in seventh with a 386.

It was a cold and cloudy start to the day with a biting wind but both White and Engle agreed that it did not affect their games too much. “It got windy at times and I felt like it effected a few of my shots but other than it was good,” White said. The players not only had to deal with the cold and wind, but two separate rain showers. “It only misted on me for about five to 10 minutes, so it wasn’t too bad,” Engle said.

Griffin Engle finished with an 81 for Madison-Grant, Brady Collins, Matt Carey and Zach Meisner all finished with 86. Alexandria was led by Andy Rowe’s 83, Mason Knopp shot an 88, Isaac Collis finished with an 89 and Izzy Ryan shot a 91. Frankton was led by Cameron Bates’ 91, Andrew Shafer finished with a 92, followed by Noah Hinds (98), Adam Likens and Conner Bates both shot a 105.

But the day clearly belonged to the Eagles, who broke school record with the 296. “We had a great day for golf, we had a great course, it was in fine shape” Conway said. “The guys were excited to come out here today, defend the title and we got it done”.

The All Conference team consisted of Oak Hill’s Cody and BJ White, Brayton Swan and Michael Law, Duckwall of Eastbrook, Lockwood of Mississinewa, Engle of Madison-Grant and Blake Thiery of Blackford.
