PENDLETON, Ind. — Who needs the left side of your starting offensive line when you have running backs like Chris Clemmons, Jim Arney and Noah Etchison carrying the football.
That stable of Arabian backs powered Pendleton Heights to a 33-0 victory over Muncie Central on Friday night in Pendleton.
Clemmons was the workhorse, finishing with 115 yards and a touchdown on 16 carries while Etchison racked up 83 yards and a touchdown on seven carries and Arney tossed in 71 yards and a score on just five totes. Pendleton Heights finished with 292 yards on the ground and 369 total yards of offense.
“We’re banged up there, and the whole left side of our line was out,” said Pendleton Heights coach John Broughton. “Our kids did a nice job (up front), and our running game was there. They did a nice job carrying the football. It was (Clemmons’) first time under fire, and we saw the potential. He’s a good athlete, and he had a good game.”
Senior Chandler Wilson also had a big game on both sides of the ball, finishing with three catches for 37 yards and a touchdown on offense. On defense, he had an interception and returned a punt 68 yards for another score. Quarterback Jesse Furrow finished 6-of-13 passing for 87 yards and a touchdown.
“Chandler has been a starter for three years in the defensive backfield,” said Broughton. “He’s doing a nice job and made some big catches. He was 10th in the state in punt returns last year so we know he is dangerous there.”
Not to be outdone by the offense, the defense pitched a shutout. The Arabians limited the Bearcats to 202 total yards, including just 63 in the second half. Etchison and Tyler Parrish recovered fumbles and Wilson, Cody Cochran and Matt Goff each had interceptions as the defense forced five turnovers.
“We are pleased with the win, but when you look at all phases of the game there are a lot of things to correct,” said Broughton. “Defensively, we got the shutout, and our kids did a nice job. All in all, it was a good night.”
Pendleton Heights (1-0) travels to Anderson next Friday.
