Arabian boys win county cross country title

PENDLETON — On an afternoon that featured nearly perfect conditions for running, the host Pendleton Heights Arabians won the boys Madison County cross country title Tuesday at PHHS.

The boys defeated defending champion Frankton for their 10th title in 12 years. For the boys, the Arabians were led by the 1-2-3 finish of Tyler Flood, Parker Jones and Eli Young as Pendleton outscored Lapel 28-61 to capture the crown.

Tyler ran the course in 17:25.2, about 7 seconds ahead of his teammate Jones.

“It’s good (to win)” Flood said. “My legs got a little tired (toward the end) but otherwise I felt pretty good.” It was a great finish for Pendleton but what made it more impressive was the Arabians were without their top runner, Tony Flood, who was out with an illness.

For the Arabians, the key was consistency. Coach Alan Holden spoke earlier in the year about having the No. 4 and 5 runners close up to the top 3 for the Arabians to compete. In Tuesday’s race, Eli Young finished third to help the Arabians overcome the loss of their top runner.

“Our number four runner (Young) is showing a lot of promise,” Holden said. “We just need our No. 5 back in.”

Lapel outpaced Frankton 61-73 to capture second place. The Bulldogs were led by the fifth place finish of Logan Bradley while Noah Hendershot finished ninth, Danny George was 11th, Jon Ross Richardson ran to a 16th place finish and Colton Allen was 20th.

Frankton was led by the sixth place finish of Garrett Allen, Dylan Doan was seventh, Patrick Spillman 14th, Nate Gollmer 18th and Keegan Planalp 28th. Anderson Prep Academy was fourth with 92 points, Anderson was fifth with 117 and Liberty Christian was sixth with 145.

APA was led by top finishes by Tyler and Terrell Barnes, who finished fourth and eighth respectfully. William Cox was 17th, Denzel Lewis was 31st and Kevin Nguyen was 32nd for the Jets.

Anderson was led by Ethan Strangeway’s 19th place finish while Jacob Butler was 21st, Austin Stevens was 22nd, Patrick Cole was 25th and Conor Johnson was 30th. Josh Kardatzke paced Liberty Christian with a 23rd place finish while Justin Krieg was 24th. Daniel Conrad was 29th, Noah Weston was 33rd and Devon Raper was 36th.
