Arabians' coach: Team not physical enough

FORTVILLE, Ind. — On the surface it looked like Pendleton Heights lost Friday’s boys basketball game to Mount Vernon due to an inability to deal with the Marauders’ zone defense.

But PH coach Brian Hahn believes there was a bigger cause and a deep concern regarding the 49-37 loss.

“The zone didn’t beat us,” said Hahn. “We forced more turnovers out of them (19) then we had ourselves (17). What beat us was getting outrebounded 24-10 on the boards. We have to get more physical.”

The Marauders had six offensive rebounds compared to two for the Arabians and it seemed that all six led directly to points. Mount Vernon did a good job of finding good shots and the result was a 68 percent clip from the field. Stephen Turner hit all but one shot and led all scorers with 18 points for the home team. Teammate Zach Spears added 12 and also only missed one field goal.

Even though it wasn’t the problem when looking at the big picture, the smaller focus of the Mount Vernon zone was a factor in the PH loss.

Pendleton took 32 shots in the game and 18 came from 3-point range. The Arabians hit half of their long range shots, four by Sean McDermott and three by Brogan Gary. The latter had his playing time limited to 25 minutes by foul trouble.

“They used five different zones,” said Hahn. “We didn’t attack it. In the second half we did a better job of attacking it and they got out of it. We knew that was what they were going to do but we didn’t get a lot of time to work on it after playing on Tuesday.”

Gary topped PH in scoring with 13 points and McDermott was next with 12.

The Arabians didn’t have anyone to flash into the paint in the zone and then do something positive offensively. That led to just 14 2-point field goal attempts, of which the Arabians hit only four.

The Arabians got on the road today for the third time in five days ass they play at Connersville. “We’ve got to go get a win at Connersville,” said Hahn. PH is 1-3 and the Spartans were 3-1 going into Friday’s game against Richmond.
