Rick Bramwell: Gifts can't be measured by dollars

I hope you had a wonderful Christmas, I sure did with two fine dinners, family and friends and very nice presents. It was never more apparent than this Christmas: It is better to give than receive.

One of my softball girls, Brittany, was bemoaning the fact that she gave a much less expensive gift than she received from a friend. Adults feel this way and so, apparently, do 14-year old girls. I explained the giver gave the best he could and she her best. Yet, Brittany was already making plans to shore up the inequity next time.

I explained that a gift-giving race is not what Christmas is about. God gave the most when He gave His Son. All he wants in return is that we believe.

I continued to think about our conversation when it dawned on me that my best present was a hug from someone who had nothing else to give — Brittany's twin sister, Brianna.

According to the DNR, anglers, fishing guides and biologists will convene Jan. 18 in Fishers to talk about the state's management plan for muskie at the inaugural Indiana Muskie Summit.

The summit is open to the public and will be hosted by the Hoosier Muskie Hunters and Webster Lake Musky Club. It runs from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the American Legion Post (9901 E. 126th St.).

Agenda topics include an update on the DNR's muskie hatchery and stocking program. Discussion also is likely to include potential fishing regulations, habitat management and fostering partnerships.

"Our state offers some of the best muskie fishing in the Midwest, and we want to keep it that way," said Scott Law of the Hoosier Muskie Hunters. "The meeting will bring together DNR biologists who are directly involved with muskie management, fishing guides, avid muskie anglers and any angler who wants to learn more about Indiana muskie fishing."
