Rick Teverbaugh: Wonderful teams to follow now

Over this past week there have been a couple of stunning team performances that are worthy of praise here as both of those teams head for big weekends.

Tuesday night I witnessed something I had never seen before in my 30 plus years here at the HB. I saw a team from our coverage area defeat Muncie Burris in a volleyball match.

Madison-Grant did it Tuesday and in a slightly unlikely fashion. The Argylls spotted the Owls -- get it, spotted the Owls -- a two-set lead before roaring back to win three straight sets and the match.

But that’s not the only thing that made the comeback and win improbable. Madison-Grant did it with several very young players taking key roles. After butting heads with Wapahani for the past couple of regionals, this victory was deserved and should be cherished for a long time by those in the program and those who witnessed it.

Now the Argylls will head to Bremen on Saturday, hopefully for two semistate matches and a berth in the state finals the following weekend.

HB sports staffer George Bremer will be making the trek north to cover the semistate for our Sunday edition. I am envious of what he will witness, though not of the drive he’ll need to make to watch it.

I wish nothing but the best for coach Bob Holloway and Madison-Grant.

The Pendleton Heights girls cross country team has an important trip of its own. The Arabians will visit Terre Haute on Saturday afternoon for the IHSAA state finals.

The New Haven cross country semistate is a meat grinder every year and some very good teams from this area have had their state finals hopes dashed there. That didn’t deter the Arabians and coach Melissa Hagerman. They finished third to move on a team.
