Rick Teverbaugh: County golf tourney coming soon

It won’t be long before a Madison County tradition is revived, and time is running out to participate.

The Madison County Men’s Amateur Championship hasn’t been contested since 2006.

“Jay Dixon told me they had 18 players then,” said Anderson Country Club pro Scott Steger.

Steger, along with Fall Creek Golf Pro Jim Phillips, is putting together the 2013 version, which is scheduled for July 27 and 28.

The first round will be held at Fall Creek and the second round at Anderson Country Club.

“The response at Pendleton (Fall Creek) has been real good,” said Steger. “Jimmy has something like 20 or 25 signed up. But the other clubs just have a smattering of players. I have only a couple from (ACC) here. My members get to play here all the time.”

The original deadline was Monday, but that deadline has been wiped away in hopes that some golfers may decide closer to the start date to play.

The plan was to cap the field at 100, but it appears nobody will be turned away because of that number.

“We knew this would take a while to get going,” said Steger.

Each golfer will pay $85 to play both days.

There are plans to make the event more inclusive in future years. Right now players need to be residents of the county to play. Next year the requirement is likely to be only that the golfer is a member of a Madison County golf club.

“Next year we may add the ladies,” said Steger. “We also might look at adding a senior division.”

This is a great project, and I think it is something for golfers to seriously consider.

There’s another event worth getting the attention of local tennis players. It is a fundraiser for Anderson Christian School.

It will be held on Aug. 2 and 3 at Anderson Christian (2625 Lindberg Rd.).
