Rick Bramwell: Lasswell delivers big pan fish

I joined the Hoosier Outdoor Writer's Association in 1971 and became president in 1973. Since then this solid group has had 33 members pass away. The young kid has now become the third-oldest member. I have attended every annual meeting, the last one last weekend at Fort Benjamin Harrison State Park.

Writer Tom Berg arranged for me to fish with local crappie pro James Glen Lasswell. We were supposed to fish Geist or Morse, but Lasswell took me to a 25-acre private pit near Plainfield. He promised big pan fish.

My guide did not disappoint, we caught huge crappie, big bluegill and monster redear. Most of the gills were taken on an Alan Muey jig tipped with wax worms. The crappie fell for curlytail grubs.

Lasswell lives in Anderson and fishes a couple of crappie tournament circuits. We compared notes on Morse and decided to fish it together after his next event just to our north.

Crappie USA Inc. will hold a qualifying event on Mississinewa and Salamonie Lakes on June 14. Anglers will be fishing for a seven-fish limit of crappie, which could net them a check along with the opportunity to advance to the Cabela's Crappie USA Classic.

A pretournament seminar will be held June 13 at Bozarth Recreational Resort & Country Store, 7309 E. 400 North, Largo. Sign-up will begin at 5 p.m. with the meeting and a National Sponsor Field Test Product Drawing starting at 7 p.m. This seminar is open to the public, for those not fishing the event. The Amateur Division offers a chance for local and new up-and-coming anglers the opportunity to fish on a competitive level at half the cost of the Semi-Pro entry fee.

The tournament weigh-in will be held on June 14 at the Mount Etna Boat Ramp, Hwy 124, beginning at 3 p.m. This is the perfect opportunity for noncompetitors to come and learn how the big ones are caught. Interviews of the top five teams will be conducted after the weigh-in.
