Kanaan tries to keep Triple Crown alive

There are a million reasons why IZOD IndyCar driver Tony Kanaan is hoping for a victory at Pocono Raceway this weekend.

Kanaan, the winner of the Indianapolis 500, is the only driver eligible for a $1 million bonus offered by Fuzzy’s Vodka.

If Kanaan can win at Pocono and score a victory in the season-ending race at Auto Club Speedway in California he will pocket a cool million dollars. Winning two of the three races will bring the popular driver a $250,000 bonus.

“Obviously I’m the only one that has a chance to win the Triple Crown, so the pressure is on. But I’m excited,” Kanaan said. “Pocono will be the third of four races I will run in the Sunoco “Turbo” car, and after the success we have had in the first two -- finishing on the podium at both Texas and Iowa -- I really want to keep that momentum going at Pocono and hopefully do even better.”

The only time Kanaan has been on the Pocono track is during a test session in June and he will be back for an open test on Thursday.

“I have never raced at Pocono Raceway, but we know we had a good car at Indy and had a good test at Pocono a few days ago,” Kanaan said.

The Sunday race marks the end of a string of oval races for the IndyCar Series and Kanaan recorded podium finishes at both Texas and Iowa already this season.

A win on the Pocono oval will not come easy for Kanaan. Several drivers including the four-drivers for Andretti Autosport have shown the capability of running strong on the oval tracks. James Hinchcliffe won at Iowa with teammate Ryan Hunter-Reay finishing second and Marco Andretti running strong before a mechanical issue ended his day.It will be interesting to see how the IndyCar drivers handle the always difficult Pocono track with the tunnel turn and the extremely long front and back straights.
