Basketball has started in earnest

Now this is more like it. Two girls basketball games under my belt and two more scheduled before the weekend is over.

By the time I take a day off on Sunday I will already have seen nearly half of our area's girls basketball teams play. Then the boys join the party next week.

I will be back to getting dinner from refreshment stands in gymnasiums much more often than I get to eat at home. But it is one of the things I love most about this time of year.

I have been looking forward each morning to George Bremer's series of boys basketball previews. Hopefully it has everyone fired up for next week.

In both the girls and the boys seasons, there will be some good teams, even more good players and a bunch of new coaches to keep things interesting. Frankton has an especially interesting schedule with a trip to Bankers Life Fieldhouse and then a chance to host nemesis Wapahani.

Not to leave out anyone, girls swimming got started locally Wednesday with the boys to follow shortly. Wrestling gets underway next week as well.

We're not completely finished with fall either. We will soon start naming our Athlete of the Year selections and Honor Roll picks for each of the fall sports. The coaches have had a couple of weeks to get nominations to us and we are starting to make plans to get stories done on these great competitors.

This past week has also been busy with high school athletes signing letters of to continue careers in college. There has been a large number of these signings and we will get them reported in as timely a manner as possible.

Several local graduates are playing winter sports in college and we hope to begin reporting on some of those this Saturday when Butler and PH graduate Kellen Dunham visits Ball State for a 2 p.m. tipoff. Check Sunday's HB for results of that contest.
