Rick Teverbaugh: Sports fan ready for NBA, NHL

So what is this sports fan to do today?

The Indianapolis Colts are off until a week from today in Texas. The Los Angeles Dodgers are off for a lot longer than that.

Tony Stewart is out for the rest of the season, and that makes the rest of the NASCAR season a bit less compelling, for me at least.

Certainly there is still the NFL, and Red Zone does a great job of keeping me up to date there. The World Series continues, but I’ll need a nap this afternoon to stay up until that late-night affair is finished.

But there are a couple of bright spots.

The National Hockey League has been underway for a couple of weeks. For the past couple of seasons, quite a few of the games have been available on television. As I write this, my Nashville Predators are preparing to play at St. Louis against the Blues. I am recording that to be viewed today or perhaps on a day off Monday.

My love for hockey is mostly unrequited love in this area, but it is still one of my favorite team sports.

Also providing cheer and a bit of sadness to my mood is the fact that the Indiana Pacers will start their regular NBA season on Tuesday.

It is good news because I have huge expectations for this season. This is the year the Pacers could roll into the NBA Finals, despite the existence of the Miami Heat. Indiana nearly took out the Heat a year ago, and the Pacers have clearly made more improvements than the Heat since that series.

The bad news is that one of my two precious Pacers fans won’t be sharing the excitement this season. My mother passed away eight days ago. There was no better fan of the team among my family members. She would often stay up well past her normal bedtime to be able to see all of a game.
