Fort Wayne gang shootout leaves 5 men wounded

FORT WAYNE — A dispute between two rival gangs led to a shootout in Fort Wayne that left five men hospitalized Sunday, police said.

The dispute began at a bar and gang members chased each other in vehicles to a south side intersection where the gunfire erupted, Fort Wayne police spokesman Officer Chris Felton said.

Police found two of the wounded gang members outside a home a few blocks from the intersection about 4:30 a.m., Felton said. The three other wounded gang members showed up at two hospitals within 25 minutes.

One of the five people wounded was listed in critical condition Sunday evening, two were in serious condition, and two were in good condition, Felton said.

"All of the victims are confirmed gang members," Felton said.

The identities of the injured men and names of their gangs were not being released Sunday.

Felton said it was too soon to determine whether Sunday's shooting was related to others that occurred over the past few days.

The shootings came just two days after Police Chief Garry Hamilton announced the creation of a gang and violent crimes unit.

"We know who you are. We know who your friends are. We know what kind of vehicle you drive," Hamilton said Friday, surrounded by police officers, state troopers and other law enforcement officials. "If you continue this behavior, you'll become the focus of the Fort Wayne Police Department and the people behind me."

The unit will work seven days a week and collaborate with the Allen County Sheriff's Department, Indiana State Police, state and federal prosecutors, the FBI, the Drug Enforcement Agency, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms and federal marshals, Hamilton said.
