HOBART — A northwestern Indiana mayor says he won't support the opening of a privately owned immigration detention center in his city.
Hobart Mayor Brian Snedecor told a community group opposed to the proposal on Sunday that he believed Florida-based GEO Group should look elsewhere.
The Times of Munster and the Post-Tribune report the company bought 40 acres in the Lake County city last November, but hasn't released any details about the possible project.
Snedecor says the company hasn't done anything to address community concerns about the project. He says a site closer to an airport or highways and away from a residential area would be better for the proposed center.
Those at the meeting gave the mayor a standing ovation during the meeting.
