Purdue trustees considering bonus for Daniels

WEST LAFAYETTE —  Purdue University trustees are set to decide whether school president Mitch Daniels will get a performance bonus for his first six months in office.

The discussion is expected during a trustees meeting Friday that comes days after The Associated Press reported on emails showing that while Daniels was governor he tried to eliminate liberal "propaganda" from teacher education courses at  Indiana's public universities.

Daniels has a base salary of $420,000 and is eligible for up to $126,000 in bonuses.

The performance goals for Daniels haven't been set. Purdue lawyer Steve Schultz tells the Journal & Courier that trustees could consider a recommendation Friday.

Former University Senate chairman Paul Robinson tells The Indianapolis Star it's difficult to justify a bonus for Daniels after he proposed a pay freeze for many staffers.
