Storm with 65 mph winds hits northern Indiana

SOUTH BEND, Ind. — The National Weather Service reports a severe thunderstorm storm packing winds of up to 65 mph knocked down trees and power lines in central northern Indiana on Wednesday afternoon.

The weather service says trees were reported down in Elkhart, St. Joseph and Marshall counties and half-inch hail was reported near Pierceton in Kosciusko County.

Indiana Michigan Power Co. reports that about 1,200 customers in St. Joseph County and about 1,000 in Elkhart County are without power.
