Boston company plans S. Ind. hydroelectric project

INDIANAPOLIS — A Boston-based company is pushing ahead with a $12 million project to retrofit and reactivate a long-idle hydroelectric power plant in southern Indiana.

Free Flow Power Corp. announced plans Thursday to install four new turbines at the Williams Dam on the East Fork of the White River in Lawrence County.

Company Vice President Tom Feldman says the project about nine miles west of Bedford will generate four megawatts of power. Free Flow Power is in talks with potential buyers of that power.

Feldman says the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission is expected to approve a project license by early 2014, and the plant should go online by mid-2016.

The state Department of Natural Resources owns the Williams Dam. It originally included a hydroelectric powerhouse, but that was decommissioned during the 1950s.
