Winter storm causes Ind. pileups, highway closings

The Associated Press

INDIANAPOLIS — A winter storm dropping up to 3 inches of snow has slickened highways across Indiana, leaving one motorist dead and many others injured across the state.

Greenfield Police say Interstate 70 east of Indianapolis was closed in both directions after a fatal collision at midday Thursday.

Indiana State Police say a semitrailer slammed into five stopped vehicles on I-70 near Brazil, critically injuring one driver still in a vehicle and seriously injuring another standing outside. And in nearby Vigo County, a sheriff's deputy says six teenagers were injured when one vehicle slid through an intersection and collided with another. He says another accident involving a school bus did not involve injuries.

Police report collisions also closed portions of I-65 in central and southern Indiana and I-69 south of Fort Wayne.
