Pence: Thatcher advanced economic freedom, liberty

INDIANAPOLIS — Gov. Mike Pence and other conservatives in Indiana are remembering former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher as an important partner in ending the Cold War and championing free markets and individual liberty.

Thatcher, who served from 1975 to 1990 as leader of her nation's Conservative Party, died from a stroke Monday in London. She was 87.

"At a time when the world needed bold vision and principled leadership, she inspired a generation to confront economic malaise and threats to freedom everywhere," Pence said. "Her passion and vision helped reshape the course of history and helped end the Cold War."

Sen. Dan Coats added that Thatcher left behind a remarkable legacy, calling her a revolutionary leader who put sound policies above politics.

"Together with President Ronald Reagan, the two formed a dynamic pair of world leaders that had a major influence on international affairs at a critical time in history. Whether it was her controversial fiscal measures to restore Britain's economy or her decision to stand with the United States to end the Cold War, Mrs. Thatcher was a woman of courage and conviction and her legacy should serve as an inspiration to all elected officials," Coats said.

Rep Jackie Walorski added that Thatcher's legacy would continue to inspire female politicians around the world, while Rep. Marlin Stutzman said freedom has "lost a courageous leader."

"Americans owe a great debt of gratitude to the Iron Lady for her friendship, loyalty to principle and determination to make Great Britain and the world a better place," Stutzman said.
