Tipton farmers donate $10,000 to food pantry

'Hoppers for Hungry' program in second year

TIPTON — The Encore Life Center will be receiving a check for more than $10,000 to purchase food for those in need through the “Hoppers for the Hungry” program.

The donation comes just before the Thanksgiving holiday and in time for the Christmas holiday season.

Brady Peters, president of the Tipton County Young Farmers, said local farmers donated $5,361 to the food pantry this year. In addition to the funds donated by the farmers, the Tipton County Foundation is matching $5,000 for the Encore Life Center through the Agriculture Endowment Fund.

In its second year, the Hoppers for the Hungry Program raised $2,900 for the food pantry in 2012.

“I will be delivering a check to the Encore Life Center for $10,361,” Peters said. “I’m elated. We were able to raise three times the amount raised last year.”

He said the amazing thing is that a year ago corn was selling for $6.50 per bushel, compared to about $4 per bushel this year. Peters said a lot more crops were donated by local farmers.

Farmers designate a certain number of bushels to donate. The participating grain elevators then turn over the equivalent dollar amount to the program.

Peters said the “Hoppers for the Hungry” program is not really hard work.

“It’s rewarding to be able to benefit the people of the community,” he said earlier this month.

“We feel as farmers, it is our job and mission to feed the world,” Peters said in a press release. “During the recent economic recession, many families, including those in our own community, were adversely affected and some struggle to have enough to eat. This is one step we can take to make sure we are fulfilling our mission and give back.”

The Tipton County Young Farmers are hopeful that organizations in other Indiana counties and other states begin similar programs.
