---- — TIPTON — Since major flooding in Tipton in April, the Tipton County Foundation has received approximately $65,000 in flood relief donations.
Numerous fundraisers have been conducted in the community and added to a $25,000 contribution from the Chrysler Foundation. The Chrysler Foundation also donated $25,000 to the United Way of Howard County for floor relief efforts.
A motorcycle ride was the third major event organized by a group of local businesses and the Tipton County Chamber of Commerce, which collectively raised over $16,000 including sponsorships.
The other community events were a Better Luck Sally Band Concert and Dinner ($1,600) at the Tipton Elks Lodge and a Cruise-in at Tipton Park that included food and a silent auction ($6,500).
“There have been 155 recorded donors of 164 gifts, besides all those who gave anonymously through organizations or collections,” Frank Giammarino, executive director of the foundation said. “About $15,000 has been contributed directly to the fund by individuals, and the other $25,000 (besides Chrysler’s gift) comes from churches, clubs, organizations, professional offices, and other businesses.
“This is the fastest and biggest fundraising through the foundation during the past nine years, when the records were computerized,” he said.
Giammarino said this was not a planned campaign and was a spontaneous outpouring of support from the community.
“People felt there was a need and choose to support this effort,” he said. “Some people, who have not donated recently, decided to make a donation while others increased their giving.”
Tipton County Emergency Management Agency officials have organized committees that are working with residents on federal and state assistance and for the distribution of local aid.
Each case is being individually reviewed and approved. So far, $35,000 for repairs, replacement and reimbursement has been paid from the fund, with many more cases still to be addressed.
“The goal is for each affected resident with financial need to have a safe, sanitary, and secure home,” Giammarino said..
Any remaining funds may be made available to local government for directly related costs or they may be reserved by the foundation until needed for the next such disaster, he said.
Checks of any amount should be made to Tipton County Foundation and for the memo state flood relief. Mail the donations to TCF at PO Box 412, Tipton, IN 46072. Donors will receive a receipt for their gift, which they may use to itemize a deduction on income taxes.
Contributions made anonymously or in a group collection, for an auction purchase or for an event that is not conducted by a charity are not tax deductible.
