Gregg pondering second run for Indiana governor

INDIANAPOLIS — Former Democratic gubernatorial candidate John Gregg said Wednesday he is pondering another run at the state's top job, but has yet to make a decision.

Gregg narrowly lost to Republican Gov. Mike Pence last November despite the state's Republican tilt and Gregg being heavily outspent when it came to on-air ads. The showing surprised many Democrats because Gregg came so close to winning, but the missed opportunity also disappointed them.

Gregg said he hasn't decided whether it's worth another run.

The Corydon Democrat reported Wednesday that Gregg told Democrats in Harrison County that he wanted to "keep going" following two years on the campaign trail. But Gregg said that was a lighthearted response to the local Democratic chairman's insistence that Gregg should be governor.

"That was the county chairman's excited introduction of me," Gregg said.

Still, Gregg has given every indication he's interested in the job he almost won. He has traversed the state in the last few months speaking at Democratic Jefferson-Jackson fundraisers and gauging support among party activists.

Gregg lost to Pence by just less than 3 percentage points in November in a race that was largely overshadowed by the state's U.S. Senate battle between Treasurer Richard Mourdock and then-U.S. Rep. Joe Donnelly.

The next governor's race in 2016 is a long way off, but Democrats are still positioning themselves for a battle. Gregg supporters in the state party courted his running mate, former state Senate Minority Leader Vi Simpson, to run the party as it rebuilds after the 2012 elections. But she opted out and the pick of now-U.S. Sen. Donnelly, John Zody, was tapped instead to lead the party.
