Deadline looms to sign up for deer reduction hunts

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Time is running out for hunters who want to participate in this year's state park deer-reduction hunts.

Sunday is the deadline for hunters to apply. Applications are available at .

The hunts are designed to keep deer populations in check and reduce the ecological damage the animals cause in state parks. Biologists examine plant recovery and previous hunters' success to determine which parks need a reduction each year.

Nineteen state parks have been selected for hunters using firearms. They include Brown County, Indiana Dunes, McCormick's Creek, Turkey Run and Shakamak.

Fort Harrison and Clifty Falls state parks are authorized for archers.

Indiana residents who are age 18 by Nov. 18 and have at least one valid deer state deer license can apply.
