ISP: 4 girls caught after trying to run down officer

Teens escaped from Greencastle facility

CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind. —  Four girls who escaped from a central Indiana home for troubled youths have been captured after trying to run down a police officer in a stolen van, prompting the officer to open fire on them, Indiana State Police said Sunday.

The girls, who range in age from 13 to 17, escaped early Sunday from the ResCare Residential Program in Greencastle, about 40 miles west of Indianapolis, and stole a van owned by the program, Sgt. Kim Riley said.

A police officer spotted the van at about 1:20 a.m. in Crawfordsville, a city about 30 north of Greencastle. He stopped it in a store parking lot and ordered the girls out of the vehicle, Riley said.

“The driver put the van into reverse, struck the police car, and attempted to run the officer down. The officer fired several rounds at the van to protect himself,” Riley said.

The officer returned to his crashed police car and chased the van, which the girls abandoned about a block away and fled on foot.

The officer captured one of the girls, and other Crawfordsville and Montgomery County Sheriff’s officers arriving on the scene captured the other three, Riley said.

Unspecified charges against the girls will be forwarded to the Montgomery County Prosecutors Office, Riley said.

ResCare’s website says it treats boys and girls with behavior problems from across Indiana.

Further details on the girls, their hometowns and why they traveled to Crawfordsville were not released.
