House where 4 died had history of problems

INDIANAPOLIS — Andrea Yarrell and Gina Hunt were best friends and often stayed at each other’s homes, even after both became young mothers.

But when Yarrell began staying with Hunt recently, her father worried and forbid his 14-year-old daughter from visiting her sister at the house, where police said burglars struck in August and armed robbers hit in September.

Still, Lesley Yarrell never expected what happened Monday night, when his daughter, Hunt and their two children, ages 4 months and 23 months, were gunned down in the house.

“If it was really a dangerous environment and Andrea knew about it, she wouldn’t have had that baby over there,” Yarrell said.

As police searched for suspects and a motive Wednesday, a stream of visitors stopped to pray and leave stuffed animals on the front steps of the house. Above the makeshift altar, windows to the front porch revealed an assortment of exercise equipment and toys, including a child’s bicycle.

“This is a crime I really don’t understand,” said Stacie Smith, 27, who stopped to leave a teddy bear. “Them kids couldn’t have identified you. You don’t have to kill the kids.”

Police said Yarrell, Hunt and their children were shot multiple times in the face and torso while the mothers held their children in their arms. Hunt, 24; her son, Jordan Hunt, 23 months; and Yarrell, 24, died at the scene. Yarrell’s daughter Charlii, 4 months, died later at the hospital.

Two guns were found on the street near the house, police said. A set of scales, several weapons, a safe and one pound of what is believed to be marijuana were found inside.

Hunt and Yarrell both had minor run-ins with the law in the past, and Hunt’s father told television station WRTV that his daughter had gotten “mixed up in the wrong crowd.”
