Troopers ticket truckers skirting I-65/70 closure

The Associated Press

INDIANAPOLIS —  Indiana State Police are ticketing semitrailer drivers who bypass a closed section of freeway in Indianapolis using city streets.

Sgt. Rich Myers said troopers had issued about two dozen tickets through Monday afternoon to truckers who are using downtown exit ramps and city streets to skirt a section of Interstate 65/70. Restrictions barring the exit ramps to through traffic went into effect on Friday. Trucks making local deliveries are exempted.

The Indiana Department of Transportation has closed the stretch of freeway through Oct. 31 to lower pavement under seven bridges that have been struck repeatedly by oversized loads. Through traffic is directed to use Interstate 465 around the city to avoid the closed section.
