Indiana couple turns empty church into local asset

The Associated Press

INDIANAPOLIS — An Indianapolis couple who rescued an abandoned church for decay has turned it into their home and a community hangout.

The former Olivet Baptist Church appeared doomed until Carrie Bone and Mark Ortwein came along.

The Indianapolis Star reports Carrie is a nurse practitioner and Mark plays bassoon in the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra. But in only a few months they turned the old church into their home, complete with a stage where Mark can play music and a basement the size of a gym.

The building they now call Grove Haus has a sprawling living room they hope makes them some extra money. A local swing dance group has already hosted an event there.

The couple hopes to eventually host concerts, weddings and yoga classes in that space
