Name of business: Double T Leather

Opened: About four years ago. The business started at a flea market in Daleville before moving into a rented shop on Scatterfield Road. It has run out of a storefront at 34th Street and Columbus Avenue since October, where the business has four times more room than before.

Owners: Butch and Paulette Tompkins

Location: 3320 Columbus Ave., 278-1708

Employees: The Tompkinses run the store when they are not working their full-time jobs. Their granddaughter and grandson also work at the shop.

Hours: The shop is now using its winter hours, which are 4-8 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday; noon to 8 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday. In the summer, which is the store’s busy season, it is open seven days a week. Paulette Tompkins said some leather shops geared toward motorcycle riders close down for the winter. “We’re die-hards,” she said.

Products: Double T Leather sells apparel and products for motorcycle riders, including leather jackets, chaps, vests, T-shirts, sunglasses, hats, wallets, belts and cleaning supplies for leather. “We have just a little bit of everything as far as biker apparel,” Butch Tompkins said. The Tompkinses also plan a motorcycle ride for charity in late spring and hopes to plan other events. The shop would like to be a stop on other motorcycle/poker runs.

In the owners’ words: Motorcyclists themselves, the Tompkinses have had many loyal customers throughout their years in business. “We’re doing well,” Paulette Tompkins said. “Everybody’s just great. It’s just an awesome crowd. Bikers tell bikers and they tell bikers.”

Double T is the only store like it in Anderson, Butch Tompkins said. “I hope we stay that way too,” he said.
