ANDERSON — Local firm krM Architecture has opened an office in Ann Arbor, Michigan, as the company looks to expand its reach in the Midwest.
The Anderson company, which also has an office in Indianapolis, is working with a group of young professionals to “follow their entrepreneurial spirit,” said Mike Montgomery, principal architect and son of the firm’s founders, Ken and Shirley Montgomery.
Mike Montgomery said a group of young architects and others with whom the firm had previously worked planned to move to the Ann Arbor, and krM saw it as an opportunity to not only expand, but work with young, enthusiastic talent.
The Michigan team reworked an existing office space and installed project director Kyle Keaffaber to lead it.
Keaffaber, who grew up in northern Indiana native, has a master's degree in architecture from Clemson University and a bachelor of science in architecture from Ball State University. Before relocating to Michigan, Keaffaber worked on numerous projects, including the design of Ascend Amphitheater, riverfront music venue in Nashville Tennessee.
KrM currently employs 22 people, and Montgomery said the firm will continue to focus on its Anderson and Indianapolis locations.
"Our home still very much here in Anderson, but we have been able to expand and understand the risks and possibilities as well,” he said.
The company is in its third generation, with the family-owned business beginning 38 years ago when Ken and Shirley Montgomery opened offices in Anderson.
