Police investigate death at prison
BUNKER HILL — Indiana State Police say investigators suspect foul play in the death of an inmate at the Miami Correctional Facility.
Police say prison staff found 70-year-old Lannie Morgan of South Bend unresponsive in his cell about 9:40 a.m. Monday. An ambulance was summoned for Morgan, but he died before reaching a local hospital.
Police are treating the death as a homicide. An autopsy has been conducted and results are pending.
Morgan had been incarcerated within the Indiana Department of Correction since December 2011.
8-year-old boy killed crossing street
WARSAW — Police in northern Indiana say an 8-year-old boy was fatally struck by a car while crossing a street near an elementary school.
The Warsaw Police Department says the boy who was hit about 1:45 p.m. Monday was attending summer school. The boy was being taken to a Fort Wayne hospital but the ambulance diverted to a Columbia City hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Police say the boy was in the crosswalk when he was hit by the car outside Harrison Elementary School. The crash involving a 24-year-old driver remained under investigation.
Guilty plea in killing of Indy store clerk
INDIANAPOLIS — A plea agreement calls for a man to face a 52-year prison sentence for the fatal shooting of an Indianapolis convenience store clerk during a robbery.
The Marion County prosecutor's office says Desi Thomas Jr. pleaded guilty Monday to murder for the June 2014 shooting of 45-year-old Harry Briggs. Thomas is scheduled to be sentenced later this month.
Authorities say Briggs was working at Joe's Junction convenience store on the city's southwest side when the nighttime robbery happened. Thomas was accused of pointing a gun at Briggs and another store employee and demanding money before firing three shots at Briggs. Security camera video showed Thomas skipping away from the store after the shooting.
Man sentenced in killings of ex's dogs
PETERSBURG — A southwestern Indiana man has been sentenced to 2 1/2 years in jail for allegedly killing and burning his ex-girlfriend's two dogs.
Jordan Hunt was sentenced Monday after a Pike County jury convicted him in May of felony domestic violence animal cruelty.
WFIE-TV reports the Hazleton man was arrested last September after police say he entered the Evansville home of a woman he had formerly dated and stole, shot and burned her golden doodle and pit bull-lab mix.
Their burned remains were found about 40 miles north of Evansville.
