Two Madison County men convicted of child molestation will be spending the next few years behind prison bars. A third man pleaded guilty to the same charge.
Madison Superior Court 3 Judge Thomas Newman Jr. sentenced Glen E. Hobbs, 72, 2114 Poplar St., Anderson, to the Department of Correction for six years following his conviction of a Class C felony. Newman ordered the entire sentence served by Hobbs.
During a December trial a jury found Hobbs innocent of a Class A felony.
The victim told a church counselor that she was molested repeatedly by Hobbs. The counselor referred the 17-year-old girl to Anderson police who conducted an investigation and arrested Hobbs in April 2005. The girl told police the incidents of fondling took place when she was in the sixth and eighth grades.
Newman also sentenced Timothy A. Shelton, 23, 123 E. 35th St., Anderson, to 12 years in prison, eight years to be served on charges of sexual misconduct to the delinquency of a minor.
Shelton pleaded guilty to the two charges in December as part of a plea agreement. He received a 12-year sentence on the Class B felony charge and six years on the Class C felony, the sentences to run concurrently. Shelton will be eligible for release from prison in 2010.
Anderson police arrested Shelton in August after he took a 14-year-old girl to a local motel, provided beer and had sexual intercourse with her.
In Madison Circuit Court, Lapel resident Kyle Jones, 21, pleaded guilty to a Class A felony charge of child molestation. Sentencing was set for Feb. 22. Jones is facing a possible 60-year prison sentence.
Jones was arrested last October by the Madison County Sheriff’s Department for forcing a 13-year-old girl to have sex at his residence.
The victim told police that Jones led her into a spare room of the house where there was a computer. The girl told police she repeatedly told Jones “no” and to stop.
Jones told police he knew the girl was 13 and that the sex was consensual. He denied having sexual intercourse with her.
