ANDERSON – The Anderson Housing Authority is partnering with the Carrie Mae Hyatt Food Pantry to open a facility in Westvale Manor, 2215 Fulton St.
The Housing Authority board approved a memorandum of understanding to have the food pantry locate in the common room.
The food pantry is currently operating in the former Brentwood Elementary School.
“The west side is a food desert,” Kim Townsend, executive director of the Housing Authority, said. “We wanted to help distribute food on the west side.”
Townsend said the Housing Authority is providing space for the pantry and storage space to include commercial coolers and refrigerators.
“Storage was a barrier to their current location,” she said. “They couldn’t store food where they were.”
Noting the 60 housing units in Westvale Manor, Townsend said the nearest grocery is the Dollar General on Nichol Avenue at Brentwood Drive.
Townsend said since the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development mandates people in public housing to provide eight hours of community service per month, the pantry will provide a place for residents to work.
The Rev. Ray Wilkins, chairman of the food pantry, said the plan is to open at Westvale Manor in June.
“Second Harvest has to approve the location change,” he said. “We were looking for a stand-alone building and will continue to search for use as a storage facility.”
The pantry will be open on Tuesdays. Wilkins said the long-range plan is to open it for a second day each week and eventually be open five days a week.
