Nichol Avenue shooting

AFD's Medic 3 carries a victim from a shooting on Nichol Avenue to St. Vincent on Saturday.

ANDERSON — Police were called to the scene of a shooting at Nichol Avenue and Fulton Street around 3 p.m. on Saturday afternoon.

Witnesses said the victim, who was not from Anderson, was in the driver’s seat of his car when he was shot in the leg and stated they heard no gunfire. Witnesses also recalled the driver holding his leg as he was helped out of his car by emergency services personnel.

Sgt. William Ray of the Anderson Police Department said the victim, a male in his 30s, suffered non life-threatening injuries. He added that APD is still investigating the incident.

Michael Evan Hale, a passenger in the vehicle, said he and the driver were on their way to Muncie.

“My buddy and I took a trip to see some family and in the process we were going to McDonalds,” Hale said. “A black guy came up, pulled out his gun and started shooting at us.”

Hale confirmed witnesses’ reports that no gunfire was heard and alleged that the suspect’s weapon had a silencer. Hale also gestured as though multiple shots were fired.

Ray disputed that claim, saying the victim was shot just once in the leg.
