ANDERSON — Twenty times this year, Anderson police dispatchers have sent officers to Club 765, according to police records.

All bars have police dispatched to their locations, but Club 765 seems to have more calls than average, according to records. For instance, so far this year, police were dispatched to Sonny Ray’s bar five times and Big Baby’s bar four times.

Police responded 43 times to calls at Club 765 in 2007.

Club 765 is frequently crowded with people both inside and on the street corner, at Nichol and Arrow avenues, Anderson police Detective Joel Sandefur said.

This lends itself to problems such as fights, Sandefur said.

For instance, a fight escalated dramatically Sunday when an assailant shot a man in the head and fired another shot that went stray and struck a bystander in the abdomen, according to police.

The bystander, Andrea Mitchell, 24, Muncie, was in serious but stable condition at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis Wednesday, and hospital officials would not say whether her condition had improved from serious but stable.

Stevaughn Fuller, 20, Anderson, was at Methodist Hospital Wednesday, and hospital officials would not say whether his condition had improved from serious. A bullet punctured the side of his head but missed his brain, according to police. He suffered a hematoma, internal bleeding and swelling.

His condition and that of Mitchell were being guarded, because they are shooting victims, hospital officials said.

It was unclear how Fuller got into the bar. He was under the legal drinking age, and no employee seemed to have checked his identification, Sandefur said.

“He shouldn’t even have been there,” Sandefur said.

Police on Tuesday executed a search warrant at the home of Marquis A. Foard, 22, a suspect in the shooting. Foard was arrested Monday on an initial charge of attempted murder, a Class B felony.

Investigators found several items of interest but would not say what they found. They had not filed a report with the county prosecutor’s office, and the search results will not become public record until the report is filed.

The shooting happened at about 3 a.m. Sunday.

Fuller was on the crowded dance floor, where he and another man became embroiled in an argument, one that quickly escalated into a physical fight. Then the man pulled a handgun from his waistband and opened fire at Fuller, Sandefur said. One shot hit the side of his head, another shot struck Mitchell, and witnesses reported a possible third gunshot, although no one else was injured, Sandefur said.

The assailant’s friends pulled him back, and bar patrons ducked for cover, Sandefur said. The shooter ran through the bar’s front door following the incident, according to police.

Fuller’s sister called 911. She had been at the bar along with their mother.

Fuller was conscious and responsive when Anderson police arrived at the scene.

The club owner could not be reached for comment.
