In a 4-3 vote, the Madison County Council passed the first reading of a possible Local Option Highway User Tax at a special meeting on Tuesday afternoon.

More than 40 people— including all three county commissioners and Anderson Mayor Kris Ockomon with members of his staff— attended the public meeting, which lasted more than two hours, at the Madison County Government Center.

Most members of the audience spoke against the tax, but some were there to support it, which would add a charge onto annual car registration fees.
