ANDERSON — Don't tell anybody, but Secret Families of Madison County is giving the Christmas experience to 75 families.
'Tis the season for the shopping teams to close down Meijer at 6:30 a.m. Saturday to buy gifts for the families. Teams will take the gifts to Tom Wood Honda for wrapping and once tied into a bow, the gifts will be delivered to the families.
Secret Families mixes necessities and fun, along with a decorated Christmas tree, a Bible and a $50 Meijer gift card for Christmas dinner, according to a press release.
The 501(c)3 charity gathers more than 300 volunteers that bring the spirit of giving to the families who were nominated by local schools, said event organizer Danielle Brossart. The Brossart family started the local effort after participating in 2009 with the founding chapter in Delaware County.
"We'll have 150 shopping and 150 wrapping and the rest will be transporting the gifts to families," she said. "There are always some that show up the day of ... we'll always find a place for them."
While the charity is prepared for Saturday, Brossart said donations are always welcome. A five-person family costs about $550 each, according to the press release.
This is the ninth Secret Families event in Madison County, but there are some firsts. The wrapping station is now at Tom Wood Honda, instead of Madison Park Church of God, she said.
"We'll be setting up at Tom Wood on Friday, and we've never been there before. They're even taking the cubicle walls out to give us more space," she said. "It's kind of crazy."
Brossart said the best way to help these families if you can't donate or volunteer is much easier: "Pray for our families, pray that they're blessed, pray that all goes well," she said.
