BERNE — A northeastern Indiana furniture manufacturer has shut its doors after telling employees they would be temporarily out of a job for two weeks.

About 20 employees of Berne Furniture received letters telling them that work at the factory would not resume as planned last week. A sign on the factory door says payroll checks are not yet available.

According to the company’s Web site, it has produced custom made sofas and chairs at its factory about 30 miles south of Fort Wayne since 1925. The company once employed as many as 130 people.

A recorded message at the company’s phone number says Berne Furniture is undergoing “corporate reorganization.”
