TERRE HAUTE — Authorities say an Indiana State University student who drowned in the Wabash River had a blood-alcohol content of 0.149 percent.

Senior business major Gerald Smith of Avon was reported missing after he left a tavern near the campus on the morning of May 1. The 22-year-old’s body was found a week later in the river in Vincennes.

Indiana State Public Safety Director Bill Mercier disclosed the toxicology result yesterday. He says the death has been determined to be accidental.

Investigators say Smith might have walked to a railroad truss bridge and slipped off during thunderstorms.
